San
Francisco, CA - The Hills Are Alive
Visiting here is like striking gold, because from
bridge to bridge, the City by the Bay has more things to
do...
Editor's favorite watering hole: Everyone
from Mission hipsters to Harley Davidson bikers goes to
Zeitgeist, especially on a sunny day. Rain or shine, art
lovers and clubbers flock to 111 Minna.
History lesson: What was started as a public
works project in the 70s, the Balmy Alley Murals in the
Latino Mission neighborhood, is a block-long outdoor art
gallery.
You can take it with you: You can't leave
San Francisco without experiencing the Castro. If you're
looking for some kitschy novelty souvenirs, hunky birthday
cards, and "personal" toys, stop in two sister
stores: Does Your Mother Know and Does Your Father Know.
Channel your inner oenophile: Wine is served
everywhere--even at the ballpark! Sip local vintages at
the Wine Merchant in Ferry Plaza, Hotel Biron in Hayes Valley,
Nectar in the Marina, and VinoVenue in SoMA.
Local flavor: Known for its brick-oven
roasted chicken for two, off-the-charts Caesar salad, Zuni
burgers on focaccia, and infinite selection of local oysters,
the multi-level Zuni Cafe epitomizes quintessential California
cuisine.
Dress code: Locals can spot shorts-wearing
tourists from a mile away. Even if it's sunny when you walk
out, make sure to have extra clothes with you for when the
fog rolls in.
Place we love, even if it's touristy: Take
the Blue and Gold Fleet ferry to “the Rock.”
Or, spice things up by spying Alcatraz in the moonlight.
Where to blow a paycheck: Amoeba Records
on Haight is one of the best spots to satisfy your DJ fantasies--find
everything from the latest CDs to obscure, vintage vinyls.
Did we mention it's free? There’s
nothing better than a walk along Crissy Field and over the
Golden Gate Bridge. Or browse some of the finest artisanal
goods and freshest produce at the farmer's market under
the Ferry Building's clock tower.

San
Francisco, CA - Gold Miner's Daughter
From the days of the gold rush to the advent of
the Internet boom, San Francisco has earned its reputation
as a stylish, high-livin' town!
Whether you prefer to hob-nob on Nob Hill or rub
elbows with Internet gurus in the Mission, this posh peninsula
offers infinite opportunities to spend a weekend in style.
Take a seat under the Golden Gate Bridge, gazing
at the Marin headlands with a sourdough bread-bowl of cioppino
and a bottle of wine--and feel like you've just inherited
the earth. Or, explore all of San Francisco's exciting spots,
from the mansions of Pacific Heights to the taqueria-dotted
flatlands of the Mission and experience what it is to be
rich in options.
California's famously chic cuisine was born in
this foodie city. Try the Fifth Floor's "lobster cappuccino,"
and be sure to stop at Zuni Cafe for their trademark brick
oven-roasted chicken and vast selection of local oysters.
Sample the region's artisan breads, wines, and produce at
the new Ferry Building Plaza, where the regional fave, Cowgirl
Creamery sells its delectable cheeses, and an outstanding
farmers' market sets up on Saturdays.
Fillmore Street's tony boutiques offer plenty of
ways to break in your credit card, or head to the more fiscally
friendly Palace of the Legion of Honor--perched majestically
above the ocean. As if the views aren't enough, this museum
boasts the original cast of Rodin's The Thinker, and 20
galleries of ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and European
art

Wine
Country, CA - By the Glass
Bike through the woven vines and undulating hills
of Northern California's wine country...
Channel your inner oenophile: Locals Tasting
Room in Geyserville pours complimentary flights of wine
culled from unknown, small-scale wineries; Del Dotto Vineyards
offers one of the most educational experiences, well-worth
$20 for the 90-minute tour and tasting; and the Michael
Graves-designed Clos Pegase features a modern art collection
with works by Jean Debuffet and Richard Serra.
Local
flavor: Pick up local staples from the landmark
Oakville Grocery (ca. 1881) for an impromptu picnic. This
tiny country store features an extensive selection of Northern
California wines, prepared foods, and cottage-industry edibles
from the region. Wine Country cheeses we love include: Cowgirl
Creamery’s Mt. Tam, Humboldt Fog Chevre, and Vella
Dry Jack. Head to Chappallet Winery and Pride Mountain Vineyards
in St. Helena for picnic areas with stunning views (both
are free but require reservations).
Editor’s
favorite watering hole: Indulge in a sunset cocktail
and vineyard vistas from the terrace of the Culinary Institute
of America or the bar balcony at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford.
History lesson: "I know it was you,
Fredo!" Brush up on your Godfather history at the majestic
Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery in Rutherford where "the
family" tree is outlined on the cellar walls, five
Oscars and Vito Corleone's desk are on view, and the sprawling
grounds have been immaculately restored to the original
1879 design.
Chill-out spot: Get dirty! Soak in Calistoga's
famous volcanic mud at Dr. Wilkinson’s 1960s-style
health spa or at Indian Springs Spa on Lincoln Avenue (both
also feature geyser-heated mineral pools).
The real deal: Pay homage to the grand
dame of the culinary world, Julia Child, at the COPIA museum
in downtown Napa. Smithsonian-inspired exhibits run the
gamut from Child's iconic pegboard wall from her Cambridge
kitchen to "The Art of Rice," which uses ancient
ceramics, rare textiles, and contemporary paintings to show
how the grain is central to social organization and religious
expression in Asia.

San Francisco. A rental car is recommended for the approximate
one-hour drive from San Francisco to Napa Valley or Sonoma
